"Vestiir heard Kaulen shouting to him, but the words were lost in the roar of the storm. How many leagues? He fought the urge to turn away from the wheel, he needed all of his focus to control the ship, to keep it from capsizing in the toss of the sea.
It didn’t matter how far the beast was, only that it was there, only that it had finally come for him. Blood called to blood, and the monster that had claimed the lives of his father and his father before him had come to claim the next of the line. Vestiir gritted his teeth, his nails digging splinters from the polished wood of the wheel. He could throw himself into the sea, as his father had done, giving his own life to save the rest of the ship’s crew. He spared a glance back at Kaulen, still clinging bravely at the helm rail, still keeping watch. Vestiir could imagine the young man in the monster’s jaws, bone shattering, even as the wood of the boat would shatter, and everything he cared about lost to memory under the water.

If he let the monster take him, Kaulen might be safe.

Vestiir tightened his grip on the wheel as it tried to wrench away, the ship hurled by another wave. There was still a chance. He refused to lose his ship, and he refused to lose Kaulen."

Wow, this came out great!! You really nailed the wood textures, anatomy, and the skin tones. Great expression on the captain's face and I love his jacket. There is a lot of great detail in this pic. The only thin that kinda bothers me is that where the water seems to be crashing, it loses that detail, so it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the picture. The same with the clouds. Besides that, you did a wonderful job with this. Kudos.
This is a great painting indeed! The colors so well choosen, I love the threatning ambiance you put into the sky. Anatomy worked out well  too.
You can be proud of yourself... must have been a really good feeling when you finished it :)

The young man who has not wept is a savage, and the old man who will not laugh is a fool.
Thanks for the feedback! (^_^)

Which part of the waves need more detail - where it's crashing around the sea monster, or where it's crashing against the boat...or both?
Absolutely amazing. It really came out great. I LOVE it. This is the first deviation I'm going to fav.
:workship: awesome paint!
Gorgeous work. I love the colors and the mood. And the pic is so lively and full of energy. Beautiful details as well.

Not much to criticize, really. The sail maybe seems a bit stiff. It's hard to show it billowing out from that particular view though, since it would be directly away from the viewer, I guess. You'd have to show the curves of the cloth by shading only, and that's always difficult.

The perspective on the wheel seems a bit off as well. The central hub portion is rotated more toward the left side of the canvas than the edges of the wheel.

But those are minor complaints, and they don't detract much from the overall viewing experience for me. I really like this pic. Nice textures. Cool scene. And the glowy lamp balls are a nice touch. I want one. Heh!
The effort put in this one is gorgeous... I can see the image fits so good with the description. It's great. Just imaging (sp?) how hard and difficult would be to create a scene like that (the storm, sea, a ship)... You're just so good. I cannot give you critique!
OMFG I love this! And the text to go with it just makes it all the more good! *glomp* Really wonderful!

You are quite welcome. No, it's mostly just around the edges....it tends to just turn into a blurry mass. I have found that water usually takes some shape of it's own, even when you say spill some water on the desk. Anyway, I'm no expert....this is light years away from what I can accomplish - you did a really awesome job with it. hehe....I was just trying not to cop out on giving some kind of critique. =p
